Replica Athenian owl tetradrachm coin necklace in fine silver and 22kt gold

This pendant was made on my hydraulic press using an impression die that was carved by Ron Landis in the style of the Athenian owl tetradrachm coin. The design is accented with fused 22kt gold accents (which are much thicker than electroplating) and the silver has been oxidized dark to show off the gold, which does not oxidize. The necklace is pictured with a substantial 18 in 2mm sterling silver wheat chain which gives this pendant a rich look; however, it can be purchased separately or with a chain from our chain section.

Symbolism of the ancient Athenian owl tetradrachm coin:

* The owl was the symbolic animals of Athena representing her wisdom and all seeing nature. The species depicted on the reverse of the Owl tetradrachms has been identified as Athene noctua, the Little Owl. They are found in the Mediterranean region and stand only six to eight inches tall, weighing between 2.5 and 4.5 ounces.

* The reverse of these coins features an olive sprig, referring to olive oil, one of Athens' primary exports, as well as ironically acting as a symbol of peace on coins that were often used to fund wars. A crescent shape, possibly a waning moon, is shown on most issues, but its meaning isn't clear. Many speculate it represents the time during which the nocturnal owl is most active, or perhaps to denote Athens' famous nighttime naval victory over the Persian fleet at Salamis.
